Detail

Roopkund is not a trek you simply walk. It is a journey you listen to. Hidden at over 16,000 feet in the Garhwal Himalayas, this small glacial lake rests quietly beneath Trishul peak, surrounded by alpine meadows and long silences. For centuries, Roopkund remained untouched, known only to shepherds and locals, until human skeletons appeared along its edges, turning it into one of the Himalayas’ greatest mysteries. Yet beyond the stories, Roopkund is a trek of raw beauty, high altitude discipline, and deep introspection.

The trail moves through some of the most beautiful high-altitude grasslands in India, Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal, where wide green meadows stretch endlessly into the horizon. These open landscapes feel almost unreal, especially after days of forest walks and steady climbs. Roopkund teaches patience. The altitude gain is gradual but demanding, and the air becomes noticeably thinner as you move higher. Each step feels earned, measured, and deliberate.

Reaching Roopkund Lake itself is a quiet moment. There is no dramatic celebration here. The lake appears suddenly, still and cold, often partially frozen, with Trishul and surrounding peaks standing guard. The atmosphere is heavy with history and silence. People speak softly, not because they are told to, but because the place demands it. It is a moment of observation rather than conquest.

This trek is not about comfort or speed. Weather can change rapidly, trails can become challenging, and summit attempts depend entirely on conditions. What Roopkund offers in return is perspective. You come back with tired legs, stronger lungs, and a deeper respect for the mountains and for yourself.

Itinerary

Day 1: Rishikesh → Lohajung

Your journey begins early morning from Rishikesh, climbing steadily into the Garhwal Himalayas. The road winds past Devprayag, Karnaprayag, and forested valleys before reaching Lohajung, the base village for the Roopkund trek. As altitude increases, the air cools and the landscape grows quieter. Evening briefing and rest.

Drive Distance: ~250 km
Time: 10–11 hours
Altitude: ~7,600 ft
Stay: Guesthouse / Homestay

Day 2: Lohajung → Didna Village

The trek begins with a gradual climb through mixed forests and village trails. You cross suspension bridges and walk beside mountain streams before reaching Didna, a traditional Himalayan village perched on a ridge. This day helps your body adjust to walking and altitude.

Trek Distance: ~7 km
Time: 5–6 hours
Altitude: ~8,000 ft
Stay: Homestay / Tents
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Day 3: Didna → Ali Bugyal

Today the trail ascends steadily toward Ali Bugyal, one of the largest alpine meadows in India. Forests slowly disappear, replaced by endless green grasslands and wide skies. Walking here feels expansive and meditative. Camp is set in open meadows with panoramic views.

Trek Distance: ~7 km
Time: 5–6 hours
Altitude: ~11,500 ft
Stay: Camps
Difficulty: Moderate

Day 4: Ali Bugyal → Bedni Bugyal

A relatively easy and scenic walk across rolling meadows. Bedni Bugyal is spiritually significant and visually stunning, with views of Trishul peak dominating the skyline. Visit the Bedni Kund temple and settle into camp.

Trek Distance: ~5 km
Time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: ~11,700 ft
Stay: Camps
Difficulty: Easy

Day 5: Bedni Bugyal → Patar Nachauni

The trail now starts gaining altitude more noticeably. Meadows give way to rocky paths and alpine terrain. The air feels thinner, and walking requires steady pacing. Patar Nachauni is a quiet campsite used mainly for acclimatization and rest.

Trek Distance: ~5 km
Time: 4–5 hours
Altitude: ~13,000 ft
Stay: Camps
Difficulty: Moderate

Day 6: Patar Nachauni → Bhagwabasa

This is a challenging yet crucial day. The landscape turns stark and dramatic as you approach the higher Himalayan zone. Snow patches are common in early season. Bhagwabasa sits close to Roopkund Lake, offering a raw and exposed camping experience.

Trek Distance: ~4 km
Time: 4–5 hours
Altitude: ~14,500 ft
Stay: Camps
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult

Day 7: Bhagwabasa → Roopkund Lake → Junargali Pass → Bedni Bugyal

Time: 8–9 hours
Max Altitude: ~16,500 ft

Day 9: Lohajung → Rishikesh

Drive back to Rishikesh through the same mountain roads, carrying silence, strength, and perspective earned in the high Himalayas.

Drive Distance: ~250 km
Time: 10–11 hours

FAQ

Is Roopkund suitable for beginners?

Roopkund is a high-altitude trek and is best suited for experienced trekkers or physically well-prepared beginners. Due to long walking days, steep sections near the lake, and altitude above 16,000 ft, prior trekking experience is strongly recommended.

What level of fitness is required for Roopkund?

Good cardiovascular fitness is essential. Trekkers should be comfortable walking 6–8 hours a day with a backpack at high altitude. Regular jogging, stair climbing, and strength training for at least 4–6 weeks before the trek are advised.

How cold does it get during the trek?

Temperatures can vary greatly.

  • Daytime: 10°C to 15°C

  • Nighttime: Can drop to -5°C or lower, especially near Bhagwabasa and Roopkund
Sudden weather changes, snowfall, or strong winds are possible, even in peak season.

Is the Roopkund summit guaranteed?

No. Reaching Roopkund Lake and Junargali Pass is weather and safety dependent. The trek leader may alter plans if conditions are unsafe. Safety always takes priority over summit attempts.

Will there be mobile network or charging points?

Mobile network is limited to Lohajung only. Once the trek begins, expect no connectivity. Charging facilities are not available during the trek, making this a complete digital detox experience.
